The Problem

Mainstream religion and environmentalism have traditionally found themselves at odds with one-another. Most people consider environmental issues to be a "left wing" concern, when, in reality, the bible tells a much different story. Whether out of fear, ignorance, apathy or misinformation, many people of faith spend very little time or energy investing in the future of humanity by embracing basic principles of environmental stewardship. Meanwhile, we're faced with the facts:

  • The US has 5% of the world's population but produces 30% of the waste and uses 25% of the world's energy.
  • The US has less than 4% of its forests remaining.
  • 2000 trees a minute are cut down in the Amazon alone. That is 7 football fields a minute!
  • US industry admits to 4 billion pounds of toxic pollution released per year (likely far more).
  • As many as 3 animal species become unnecessarily extinct every day.

    The Solution

In the same way that praying, singing, tithing, and serving are all methods of worship, protecting and taking care of God's creation is an act of worship as well. In the Old and New Testaments, God calls all people to be caretakers of creation... stewards!
Times are changing. The American religious climate is evolving. Spiritual people are becoming concerned about the environment and are looking for ways to get involved in environmental stewardship. In "God is Green," Brandon Walker discusses not only the problems that face humanity in the face of climate change, but the simple and effective solutions which are right before our eyes.
